Start with the input
Time interval, quotation source and price type affect the calculation. The same indicator name can produce different values under different settings. Ensure comparisons use compatible observations rather than silently mixing scales.
Smoothing trades detail for delay
A moving average combines earlier observations and reduces visible variation. A longer window generally smooths more and responds more slowly. A crossing does not guarantee the next movement. Compare two windows on the same period and explain the difference without selecting a favourable example afterward.
An oscillator describes a relative condition
RSI and related measures transform a price series. An extreme reading does not require an immediate reversal. Such readings can persist during sustained movement. The formula, period and observed context matter more than a colour change.
Several lines can repeat one idea
Three calculations based on the same price and similar smoothing are not three independent pieces of evidence. Explain the separate purpose of each additional element. A crowded display may reduce comprehension without adding meaningful information.
Separate tuning from evaluation
Develop a rule on one segment, freeze its settings and inspect another unused segment. Record the alternatives you tried: repeated searches increase the opportunity to find an attractive result by chance. Failed combinations belong in the account of the experiment.
Write an indicator profile
Record its input, period, interpretation, expected limitation and invalidation condition. This profile is more informative than a universal collection of “best settings” detached from a specific task and dataset.
Your verification checklist
- Identify the data source and interval.
- Explain the calculation in plain language.
- Give every additional indicator a distinct purpose.
- Keep evaluation observations separate from tuning.
Questions, answered
Is any indicator free from false signals?
A transformation of past observations cannot guarantee knowledge of future prices.
Do more indicators improve accuracy?
Not necessarily. Similar calculations may duplicate information and complicate interpretation.
Which settings should I trade with?
